Pembroke Ezine Week 18

Ezine produced by our president Jonathan Bell

Dear Members,

Last Week

We have had a week with challenging results on the field, however quite a number of positives to come out of it. It is a long season with plenty of time and practice to having a great season on the field.

On Friday evening last the Ladies 1st XI took on the Mens 6th XI at Sydney Parade - the match started in daylight and ended I believe in the moonlight. The Mens 6th XI batted first scoring 148-2 off 20 overs with Anamalai scoring 34, Mark "Timmy" Holland 30 and the captain of the 4th XI James Murphy with 23. There was some excellent bowling spells from Kathy Crampton 3-26 and Ladies Captain Ciara medcalf with 4-17

In reply the Ladies finished with 79-4 batting in difficult circumstances with the light fading rapidly. Kathy Crampton scored 17 Cathy Murphy 14 and Ciara Medcalf 11.

On Saturday the 2nd XI played Railway in the Sandymount Derby - Pembroke scored 155 with Graham McDonnell scoring an excellent 70, however Railway chased the total with 5 wicket to spare - Ronan Malin taking 3 wickets of the visitors 5.

On Sunday we saw the 1st XI playing their first game in the Dublin Grass Machinery league the visitors being Clontarf - The results were as follow

Clontarf  scored  258 for 3 in 45 overs with Bill Whaley taking 1-47, Ben de Vos 1-42 and Theo Lawson 1-39. In reply the 1st XI scored 164 all out in 40.2 overs - Graham McDonnell top scored with 59,Stu McDonnell 27.

The 3rd XI paid a trip to the Phoenix however beaten and were all out for 117 and according to skipper Ricky Mann "unfortunately lost after squandering a solid start at 46 for none. The team only scrambled to 117 all out, thanks to a wonderful rearguard innings by young Barry McCarthy, who top scored on 25. The team responded with spirit and had the opposition at 65 for 6, but a fine partnership for the seventh wicket took them over the line".

I have unfortunately no details of the 6th XI match Dundrum which was played at Wesley College.

Last night saw the Ladies 1st XI play a very strong YMCA Ladies team who scored 148-2 in their 20 overs with Kathy Crampton taking 1-20 and Becca Gallagher 1-29. We responded with 50 all out with some very strong YM bowling.

Monkstown had a players meeting followed by a very well attended BBQ on Sunday last and it is great to see so many of the members at Sydney Parade and hope we will see much more of them throughout the summer. It is also planned to play 2 "Taverners matches against Monkstown during our season and as their President Dave Elmes put it "we will have a home and an away fixture".

News.

Many of the members attended Peter Ash's funeral on Saturday morning. It was a very nice service and he certainly was a man who when he had something to say he announced it in no uncertain terms - he will be missed in College Park and Sydney Parade. A collection was made at the funeral to have a chair dedicated to Peter placed in College Park.

On Sunday morning saw the Youth Cricket begin with a huge amount of people turning up take sign up for cricket. Justin Doherty sent me the following"

Youth cricket update:
Registration of under 9, under 11 and under 13 players took place on Sunday, 29 April along with first practice sessions for these age groups. There was a fantastic turnout with many new recruits in all age groups. Practice sessions for youth players up to under 13 will continue on Sunday mornings over the coming weeks, starting promptly at 10.00 and ending at around 11.30. Player registration also continues then for anyone who missed this Sunday. A special thank you to all members or parents who have either donated items of kit or sums of money towards kit purchases in response to the plea for help with this.

Any enquiries about youth cricket to Justin Doherty 087 2859728 or justindoherty@eircom.net.

It is great to see cricket becoming an even more popular sport - well done to all involved.
