Pembroke Ezine Week 16

Ezine produced by our president Jonathan Bell

Dear Members,

Welcome to the first e-zine of the new season. I will endeavour to keep you up to date on the previous weekends matches and activities, what is happening at present and the matches and events for the next weekend. I would also be grateful if any of the members have anything they would like included in this e-zine that they forward the info to me at jonathan@jonathanbell.com .

Well done to everyone who helped out last weekend in cleaning up the club in getting it ready for the season - you know who you are and it is greatly appreciated.

Last weekend

Gilderstone Junior Cricket club from Leeds in England visited Pembroke last Friday evening, 13 April, as part of a record-breaking feat which involved playing cricket matches in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland in a 12-hour period. Despite a delay in the arrival of their ferry, Gilderstone were able to complete a half-hour game with a mixed Pembroke under-14 team in near-darkness, just before the deadline of 9.00 p.m. arrived. The visitors' feat was recorded by a BBC camera crew which travelled with the team, a report on their progress was included in the BBC 'Sportsround' programme the following day, featuring footage of Pembroke and the players. Thanks in particular to Danny and his team for preparing the pitch for the game.

Congratulations to Bill Whaley's 1st XI who won a friendly against Raiway Union at Wesley College on Saturday last. Railway posted 184 and we chased it and won by 4 wickets, with Andy Balbirnie scoring an unbeaten 51, Theo Lawson scoring 47 and Matty Tighe scoring a very quick and unbeaten 35

The highlight of last weekend was the introduction to the public for the first time - the talented Pembroke Players who performed their comedy play - "Those Magnificent Ten and Their Batting Machine". The play was performed by the Ladies Players of Pembroke and the play was written by Olivia Fox and Jo Day. The cast included Olivia and Jo as well as Aoife Fitzpatrick, Nic McGrath, Carole Cromer, Sile Gallagher, Eleanor Denny, Aine Gallagher, Becca Gallagher, Celia Bonnet, and Eileen Sheehan.

The play was an outstanding success with some hilarious moments which you could definitely see many situations that take place during a typical cricket match. Well done to the whole cast and and those who supported the 2 evenings!!.

News.

Our overseas player arrived yesterday - he is Ben de Vos from South Africa and he has played a lot of cricket in the UK and he brings a lot of experience to the club and I know you will join me in wishing him the best for the coming season at Pembroke. Ben has excellent coaching qualifications in South Africa and he is looking forward to the season ahead.

We also welcome Theo Lawson to Pembroke. He joins us from Clontarf and will wish him well for the season. Theo is in the Irish Under 19 panel and has played for the Ireland Under 17 team with Andy Balbirnie and Graham McDonnell

On that note, I was at the Leinster CC dinner last Friday night and they tell me that Leinster Ladies have a new overseas professional in none other than the ex Australian opening bowler Cathryn Fitzpatrick who has recently retired from international cricket -  http://cricket.com.au/default.aspx?s=newsdisplay&id=39208having Cathryn playing in Leinster cricket will be great experience for all.

Junior nets were very well attended last evening and it is great to so many new members joining and good luck with your season ahead.

When you visit our club website www.cricket.ie  (a great domain to have by the way) - you will see that the site has had a complete overhaul. I would like to thank Guy Chilton and his team for this and you will now see the site has an online membership application form for new members. If you wish to add anything to the site please email Guy at guy@cricket.ie

I know you have been receiving updates from Mary Sharp regarding Cyril Irwin's progress and if you can up to Tallaght Hospital I know he is happy to have visitors and we look forward to seeing back "sitting on the wall" in Pembroke. Also, Cyril's sister Hazel has arrived from Canada and will be in Pembroke on Saturday evening and is looking forward to meeting the members. She has heard so many members names from Cyril and would like to put faces to the names.

Finally on the news front, congratulations to the Irish team in the World Cup, it has been a fantastic performance which will without doubt bring enhanced life to cricket in Ireland and when you hear someone talking about cricket and would like to know more about it, please put them in touch with Guy Chilton at guy@cricket.ie or have them visit the site www.cricket.ie  who is looking after player recruitment for the coming season. I believe there is talk that some of the Irish team may well be on either the Late Late Show or Tubridy over the weekend.

This weekend

The 1st XI play Old Belvedere in a 45 over friendly in Sydney Parade and we wish Bill Whaley and his team every success for the season. The weekend will see Ben de Vos playing his first match for Pembroke. As you know the 1st XI Manager is Colin Kavanagh this season and he would greatly appreciates your support for the season.

On Sunday the 6th XI take on Bagnelstown in Sydney Parade under the captaincy of the ever enthusiastic Niall Walsh ( as Clarkey is unavailable this weekend)

I hope I have included everything - I am sure I have missed something, however as I said I will endeavour to include as much as I know about - if you have anything to add - please contact me.

I look forward to seeing you during the season.
